Learning to Hear / Aprendiendo a Escuchar

Mexico recently celebrated “Day of the Mother Tongue,” honoring the many language groups represented here in Mexico, and especially here in the south. One of the prominent language groups here in Oaxaca is Mixteco. In February I enrolled in a linguistics course and learned the International Phonetic Alphabet, a tool linguists use to deconstruct any language. As part of our homework, I asked a woman to say 100 Mixteco words to me, and I had to transcribe them using my new alphabet. It was quiet the challenge to “hear” sounds I’ve never perceived and decide which alphabet symbol to use. Some of the sounds in Mixteco do not even exist in English or Spanish. I was frustrated trying to hear sounds behind closed teeth, and find meaning behind sounds that had no meaning for me. The Bible says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard what God has in store for those who love Him.”  I find myself not just singing, “Open the eyes of my heart,” but “Open my EARS!” I know God has something new for me as I open my ears to the sounds of heaven, and wait for God to assign His meaning, and His plan.

México celebro recientemente "el Día de la Lengua Madre", en honor a los muchos grupos lingüísticos aquí en México, especialmente en la región sur. Uno de los grupos lingüísticos prominentes aquí en Oaxaca es el mixteco. El mes pasado me inscribí en un curso lingüístico y aprendí el alfabeto fonético internacional, una herramienta lingüística utilizado para descifrar cualquier idioma. Como parte de nuestra tarea, le pedí a una mujer que me dijera 100 palabras mixtecas, y tuve que transcribirlas usando mi nuevo alfabeto. Fue un gran reto "oír" sonidos que jamas había percibido y decidir cual símbolo del alfabeto utilizar. Algunos de los sonidos del mixteco ni siquiera existen en el ingles o español. Me frustraba al tratar de oír sonidos a través de dientes cerrados y buscar el significado de sonidos que para mi no tenían significado. La Biblia dice, "Cosas que ojo no vio, ni oído oyó, son las que Dios ha preparado para los que le aman." No solo me encontraba cantando, "Abre mis ojos," sino "!Abre mis oídos!" Yo se que Dios tiene algo nuevo para mi mientras que abro mis oídos a los sonidos del cielo, y le espero a Dios para asignar Su significado y Su plan.
